Namche Healing Centre Shop & Pharmacy Himalayan Medical Project, Namche Bazar, Khumbu, Nepal Namche Healing Centre One of the main aims of Sacred Land has been to provide traditional healthcare for the Sherpa community. This started in 1998 when Tengboche Rinpoche requested that a doctor from the Chakpuri Medical College establish a clinic in Namche Bazar. It was originally named the Himalayan Herbal Medical clinic (now Namche Healing Centre) and is run as a social project registered with the Nepali government as an NGO. The clinic is non-profit making and is subsidized by Sacred Land Initiatives both financially and in terms of resources and staff. Medicine for poor people and porters is given free although presently that is a costy exercise as the medicines are bought in India and tansported to Namche. In October, 2005 with funding from Word Wide Fund for Nature (WWF) and the People & Plants Initiative, for the exhibition, and Medi Himal/Medi Nepal, Walter Staaden, Nyima Tashi and other local Sherpas, for the building, Sacred Land officially opened 'Namche Healing Centre' in Namche Bazar, the largest village in Khumbu, where most trekkers/climbers spend time acclimatizing to altitude. Many people visiting the area are very interested in traditional medicine and methods of healing . the purpose of the visitor’s centre is to raise awareness about Himalayan Medicine and the need for conservation of medicinal plants in the region. The new centre houses an exhibition aimed at providing information to trekkers about Himalayan Medicine, its rich history, and the plants of the region that have medicinal use. The Amchi (traditional doctor) is there to advise on healthcare, diet, meditation and relaxation techniques to locals and visitors alike. There is also a charity shop, where locally made non timber forest products and other related items are sold, and there is a video screening room similar to the arrangement at Tengboche. From this spring 2006 we will be screening available videos about Tibetan Medicine throughout the day. Return to top
